March 22 marks the return of the Dark Side of the Moon laser show at Sudekum Planetarium, which debuted in 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pink’s legendary album. It features brilliant special effects and four-channel (quadrophonic) surround-sound audio from the band’s original 1973 mixes. The show promises an otherworldly audio-visual experience worthy of one of the best-selling albums ever.
Produced by the planetarium staff of the Adventure Science Center, the show fully uses its Skylase FX system. This system, developed by Audio Visual Imagineering in Orlando, Florida, uses lightning-fast laser scanning and advanced optics to create brilliant beams at high resolutions. To find out more about the science behind the system, see this blog post on the Adventure Science Center’s website.
Dark Side of the Moon, released in the U.S. on March 1, 1973, is Pink Floyd’s eighth album. The sleeve design/photography by Hipgnosis set the standard for album artwork and is instantly recognizable across the globe. It also lends itself to the visual interpretation of laser shows like the Sudekum’s.
For the handful of folks who are unfamiliar with DSOTM, or for those who may want to brush up, here’s the entire album:
